It concerns a fictitious firm, Next-Day Air Service (NDAS). The questions posed do not have one unique solution. There are too many options when dealing with LANs, WANs, MANs, BNs and the Internet, so a realistic network design and development problem can have several workable answers. The purpose of the preliminary assignment is to introduce students to the kinds of problems confronting those introducing ecommerce infrastructures in business situations. As with any real-life problem with ambiguities or unresolved considerations, you must make your own assumptions but be sure to provide adequate justification for any recommendations you make. Background: NDAS was founded in1985 to compete in the expanding market for overnight package deliveries. NDAS provides local pickup and delivery of these parcels and other small freight items. The founders initially restricted their efforts to the rapidly growing central Florida region of USA. To support its operation, NDAS purchased a facility near the Tampa International Airport. This facility consisted of a main building and a secondary building for dispatch and fleet maintenance. Because NDAS intended to expand its services throughout the south eastern United States, this facility also served as NDAS’s corporate headquarters. Between 1985 and 1992, NDAS experienced very rapid growth. As business volume increased and the company’s reputation became firmly established, expansion of the facility became imperative. Consequently, NDAS purchased land adjacent to its corporate head quarters so it would have room to relocate both the maintenance shop and the company’s vehicle parking lot. In addition, NDAS tripled the size of its building to accommodate its growing business. Finally, in1994, NDAS completed the expansion of the office building to house its corporate operations. As its business volume increased, NDAS realized it had to develop branch offices throughout its service region to continue growing. In addition to the corporate offices in Tampa, NDAS also purchased or leased facilities in several other southeastern cities, including Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, New Orleans, Dallas, and Memphis. CaseFigure1–1 is the NDAS map of operations. NDAS also contracted with Chicago-based firm Overnight Delivery, Inc. (ODI) to provide overnight shipping service between Atlanta and the greater Chicago area. NDAS also entered into similar agreements with other air carriers. The purpose of these agreements was to enable NDAS to provide service throughout the United States. As Case Figure1 shows, connecting routes established with other carriers lead from Memphis to St. Louis and from Atlanta to Chicago and Washington, D. C. These routes allow NDAS to deliver parcels to the northeastern states and the Midwest. There are flight links out of Dallas to both Denver and Los Angeles. These two routes have been added recently to provide delivery service to the northwestern states and the West Coast, respectively. After extending its flight routes, NDAS added agents in the cities of Jacksonville, Florida; Montgomery, Alabama; Jackson, Mississippi; and Houston, Texas. To date, this is the scope of NDAS’s parcel delivery operation. Initially, NDAS contracted a computing services company to handle billing. As the computing power of small computers increased, however, NDAS purchased a minicomputer and took responsibility for its own data processing. The Payroll Department now runs the pay roll twice monthly on this computer. Employees clock in with an ID-badge system. The Payroll Department then prepares the paychecks for both hourly and salaried employees. The paychecks are sent via overnight delivery on the following Thursdays. Although the Information Services/ Data Processing Division, under Les Coone as acting manager, performs all data entry, processing, and check printing, John Lawson in Accounts Payable is the person who generates, performs all data entry, processing, and check printing, John Lawson in Accounts Payable is the person who generates, reviews, and approves the reports and totals. The billing processing normally takes place from 48 to 96 hours after freight and parcel delivery. Once this processing has been ompleted, the data base supports the resolution of any questions or problems associated with the billings. Because of an increasing volume of paperwork brought about by continued business expansion, the varying complexity of the billing process, and the preferred rates being given by competitors, NDAS’s corporate management has decided to automate the billing process throughout its Florida offices. This is the first step in a series of strategic moves planned to provide online transaction processing and real-time customer information through the Internet. Management expects online transaction processing to speed the billing process and improve receivables collection time significantly. The online query system will enable agents at remote offices to obtain information such as credit status, correct delivery address, and package delivery status. The Internet component will enable customers to obtain the delivery status of packages they have sent or are expecting to receive. The status of automation varies greatly among the various departments. The Marketing and Sales Division, headed by Bob Jones, has a personal computer (PC) for each account representative. All of these computers are connected to a small LAN that serves only Sales and Marketing. The Accounts Receivable Division, headed by Jane Van Dyke, is responsible for all billing and collection activities. It recently replaced its aging minicomputer with a powerful microcomputer server. This new server provides databases for both customer billing and bad debts. The Accounts Payable Division, led by John Lawson, maintains its own vendor database that is stored on an older minicomputer server. This database also contains the other service carriers’ billings, such as those from ODI to NDAS. This division also is responsible for the payroll. It is in the process of downsizing to a powerful modern desktop computer. Employees in the Accounts Receivable and Payable Divisions have PCs on their desk. The Fleet Maintenance Division has no computer capability. Its management has chosen to trace all necessary information manually. The nursing staffing pattern in the hospital The nursing staffing patterns in the hospital include Senior nurse officers (SNOs)-most of them are the ward incharge who ensure that the wards are operating smoothly and they are concerned with the general management of the ward . Kenya registered community health nurse –(KRCHN) theses are nurses who have acquired their training in General Nursing, Midwifery and Community Health. The Nurses are empowered with proper knowledge, skills and attitudes to promote health, prevent illness, manage and rehabilitate the individual, the family and the community that may be afflicted by ill health. The duration of study is 3 1/2 Years. Kenya enrolled community health nurses –KECHN-are trained at certificate level in accordance with the Nurses Act Cap 257 of the laws of Kenya and the regulations thereto (or any other nurse whose training and qualifications are recognized and equated at certificate level by the Nursing Council of Kenya) and whose name shall appear in any of the Rolls maintained by the Nursing Council as required by the Act. Bachelor of science in nursing interns –they usually are trained to be nurse educators ,administrators or even researchers . the duration of study is 4 years The shortage of nurses at Nyeri PGH According to my case study I focused on the shortage of the nurses in the hospiotal – The shortages is diverse in that it ranges from shortage of nurse to the other health care workers in the hospital therefore limiting the care offered to the patients . The shortages of other staff are adversely impacting nurses who have the most continuous and closest relationship with patients and their families Without sufficient numbers and quality of nurses and other health careworkers it would be difficult to meet the health care needs of the people. The total number of nurses is 310 while the ideal number of nurses should be about 420 . the shortage that exists is of about 110 nurses . From my analysis here are the number of nursing staffs findings of Nyeri provicila genrral hospital Nurses Norms Available deficit KRCHN 153 110 43 KECHN 171 145 26 For the BSN –they were 15 in total bt the hospital did not indicate how many BSN they needed as for the senior nurse officers they were 41 in total .from the my calcuklation the average approximate number of nurses were in each ward were 12 . this number was too low as compared to the number of patients admitted in that ward. Gaps Gap Between Supply and Demand for Registered Nurses Shortage is the gap between the reality of current availability of nurses and the aspiration for some higher level of provision shortage . hospital require adequate healthcare workers not only in terms of number but also they shoulh have the appropriate skills needed so as to deliver quality care to the patient. shortages exists among all the health care workers but critical gaps exist in the nursing department.the number of nurses are inadequate to meet the patient need. this shortage is not only experienced in this hospital bt also in the other health care settings at different countries . the demand for nurses in the healthcare setting is high but the supply is low in that the number of nurses enrolled are not adequate enough to meet the patient needs. this gap is widening since most of the old nurses are nearing to retire but there are no enough new nurses to recruit inorder to replace them . this issue will have negative consequences on the nursing department therefore stsrategies nned to be put in place to deal with this issue before it gets worse in the near future .a gap between patient need and the nursing care available to meet patient needs. This gap occurs because patients now remain in the hospital only as long as they are acutely ill and clearly in need of nursing care. Once these very acute care needs are met, patients are discharged. Soon other patients, likely with even higher acuity needs, will be admitted to these beds previously occupied by the recently discharged patients. A greater proportion of beds will then be filled by patients with very high acuity needs. Unfortunately, hospitals have not kept up with the need to provide more nurses to care for this increased number of patients requiring higher acuity care. This gap has led to discussions regarding the quality and safety of hospital nursing care currently provided. The increasing intensity of care, due to a greater number of invasive procedures, more powerful medications, and a growing number of patients with chronic acute illness, has markedly increased the intensity of nursing care needed. Recommendation I would recommend for the following strategies to reduce the shortage of nurses at the hospital-developing a human resourse plan that will ensure that the hospital is adequately staffed with the appropriate skill mix to the level that is commensurate withj the existing human resourse capability need. Developing and implementing an intergrated performance management system to enhance improved and sustainable productivity. it will focus on the overall performance of the hospital to find out whether are any performance improvement. Deveopling a human resourse information system that is linked to a hospital –based health management information system to strengthen planning and decision making. Development of policies inorder to increase the recruitment and retention of young adults into the nursing profession. These strategies will come up with Strategies for recruitment of new nurses are needed for the long term . Another critical area for policy intervention  is to achieve effective skill mix-through clarity of roles and a better balance of registered nurses, physicians, other health professionals, and support workers. Nurses should also shape the impression that others have about the profession. –Nurse managers and leaders can be helpful by starting an organization al campaign to educate their staff about how to communicate in social and community settings so as to encourage people to join the nursing profession. Each nurse is the most important recruiter for an organization Healthcare mangement team including nurse leaders must learn new skills for valuing employees since Retention of nurses begins with how the organization does or does not value the staff. with these skills they will reduce the incidencs of shortages in the hospital. Reach out to youth through counselors, youth organizations, schools and other outlets to promote recruitment of a younger, more diverse population of nursing students. Work Environment -Implement specific strategies to retain experienced nurses in the provision of direct patient care, such as: Introducing greater flexibility into work environment structure and scheduling programs; Rewarding experienced nurses for serving as mentors and/or preceptors for new registered nurses; Implementing appropriate salary and benefit programs. Create a partnership environment that advances the practice of nursing by: Establishing appropriate management structures within the health care system; Ensuring adequate nurse staffing and Providing nurses with sufficient autonomy over their practice in all settings. Redesign work to enable an aging workforce to remain active in direct care roles. Use of Technology, Research and Data Collection Investigate the potential for using technological advances to enhance the capacity of a reduced nursing workforce. Promote consistent data collection at the national, state and local level to account for variations at each level to enable appropriate workforce planning for registered nurses. The motivation for affirmative action comes in times when a perception or actual negative aspect towards a certain group is experienced, but illegal according to legislative bodies. It is also applied in learning and service delivery institutions such as police forces, hospitals or universities to motivate them to act more responsibly to the people they represent. According to Bulman (2006), affirmative action at the work place is a concept that should be applied in all departments. This is because many working places are characterized by cultural, social and political diversity (p.45). This is to say that people come from different communities, races, religions, political backgrounds, gender, national origins, and age, physical and mental health capabilities. This calls for affirmative action to fight for the weak mass within the working place, as these upgrades the workforce diversity. Racial and gender based discrimination in a working environment comes in the areas of granting jobs, in promotional programs and admission to institutions causing unfairness and inhumanity aspects in the working environment. Affirmative action prevents discrimination in lines with hiring bias, promotion, job assignment, compensation, retaliation and all sorts of harassments. Work place is a unique and important site for development of corporative and social ties of different groups. It has of late become the centre for corporation, socialization, and solidarity, which emerge as primary features of human psychology. His sisters were Virginia, Helen, and Lucy Lee. Edwin's two brothers were named Henry and William. After a few years Edwin decided to try Queens College located in Oxford, but later went back to the University of Chicago for postgraduate work. Edwin, at age thirty, had an undergraduate degree in astronomy and mathematics, a legal degree as a Rhodes scholar, followed by a PhD in astronomy. Edwin Hubble originally started out as a lawyer. For one year he taught Spanish and mathematics for New Albany High School. He also coached a basketball team. The high school dedicated their yearbook to Edwin Hubble that year. Finally after teaching at the high school Edwin went to Yerkes Observatory to be an astronomer. He was the very first person to try a two hundred inch telescope. Edwin Hubble served for two years in the military. Edwin also served in WWI, and met the rank of a major. In 1919, for the rest of his life Edwin would go to and worked at Mount Wilson Observatory in California in.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Edwin Hubble had many great accomplishments as an astronomer in his lifetime. Some of Edwin Hubble's greatest accomplishments were: Edwin Hubble proposed a classification system for nebulae, which are fuzzy little patches of light that are up in the sky. He discovered a variable star, called the Cepheid. It is located in the Andromeda Nebulae. Edwin Hubble settled decisively the question of the nature of the galaxies. Edwin Hubble's distribution of galaxies was determined to be homogeneous in distance. Edwin wanted to classify the galaxies according to their content, distance, shape, and pattern of brightness. By observing redshifts Edwin saw that galaxies were moving away from each other at a rate constant to the distance between them (this is known as Hubble's Law).

A Fledgling’s Masterpeice Essay

Citizen Kane is widely hailed as the â€Å"great American film† and with good reason. From its complex narrative structure to pioneering photography to its incredibly rich use of sound, Welles’ 1941 picture remains one of the most innovative movies ever to come out of a Hollywood studio. Even Today Citizen Kane stands out as one of the great films of all time. Unfolding almost entirely in flashback, Welles’s masterpiece presents various perspectives on the oversized life of the recently deceased Charles Foster Kane. Through the reminiscences of friends, family, and coworkers, the film moves from Kane’s childhood to his rambunctious adolescence, from the heights of his success to the depths of his isolation. All the while there is a search for clues to Kane’s mysterious last word: â€Å"Rosebud.† The puzzling phrase drives the tale, but ultimately it is only a means of exploring the film’s real theme: the impossibility of truly understanding any human being. In the film Kane (Orson Welles, who also directed and co-wrote the screenplay) is separated from his parents as a child and made heir to an enormous fortune. Coming of age, he decides to run a newspaper, sensationalizing the news and considering himself to be the voice of the people. With ambitions beyond publishing, he runs for New York Governor, and later promotes the singing career of his second wife Susan. He also builds Xanadu, an extravagant palace that is never finished. These various ambitions fail, and Kane dies a wealthy but spiritually broken man. When William Randolph Hearst (multimillionaire and media tycoon) got wind of what 25-year-old Orson Welles was creating at RKO’s film studio, he feared his life was the inspiration for the main character. In response Hearst and his newspapers employed all their influence to try and stop Citizen Kane’s 1941 release. John O’Hara of Newsweek addresses just this controversy in his review of Citizen Kane. He begins by stating that Citizen Kane is the finest film that  he has ever seen and that Orson Welles is the greatest actor ever. This is a bold statement to make at the time because it was printed before the film was released and before any kind of public consensus could be made. O’Hara’s observation would turn out to be somewhat true. His reasons for promoting Citizen Kane are no more than pure enthusiasm and support for a film that impressed him greatly. He states that his intension is to make you want to see the picture that he believes to be â€Å"as good a picture as was ever made†. (O’Hara 60) O’Hara seems to be more of an excited fan than a film critic. His unbridled enthusiasm is evident in every sentence of his review. He appears to be an admirer of Orson Welles’ just as much as the movie itself. He states that Citizen Kane lacks nothing. Later in the article, as if to be reassuring, he says that â€Å"aside from what it does lack Citizen Kane has Orson Welles†. He compares Welles to artists like F. Scott Fitzgerald who had gone unrecognized until after his death. He ends his article with the statement that there has never been a better actor than Orson Welles and then repeats that very statement. (O’Hara 60) The controversy surrounding Citizen Kane and W. R. Hearst is also addressed by Bosely Crowther of the New York Times. He says that â€Å"suppression of this film would be a crime†. But unlike O’Hara, Crowther seems a little more critical of the film. He says that Welles’ abundance of imagery is so great that it sometimes gets in the way of his logic. He also claims that the film â€Å"fails to provide a clear picture of the character and motive behind the man whom the whole film revolves†.(Crowther 5) Aside from the few critical points, Crowther was very complimentary towards Citizen Kane. He comments on the excellent direction of Mr. Welles and the sure and penetrating performances of the entire cast.Crother feels that Citizen Kane is one of the most realistic takes on the cinema to date. He describes it as cynical, ironic, oppressive, and realistic. â€Å"Citizen Kane has more vitality than fifteen other films we could name†. (Crowther5) The New Yorker’s John Marsh also is very complimentary of Citizen Kane, but  for much more technical reasons. He addresses the many aspects of the film that set it apart from all others. â€Å"Since movies hitherto have commenced with a cast list and a vast directory of credits, we are promptly jolted out of our seats when Citizen Kane ignores this convention and slides at once into the film.† He believes that this formal difference is revolutionary enough to establish Welles’ independence from convention. â€Å"This independence, like fresh air, sweeps on and on through the movie.†(Marsh 79) Marsh also comments on Welles’ method of storytelling with the use of repetition and flashing scenes. â€Å"With a few breakfast scenes, the progress of a marriage is shown as specifically as if we had read the wife’s diary. To Marsh something new has come to the movie world at last. He believes that the film’s triumphant quality is that although Kane is presented as a villainous miser, the human touch is not lost. Sympathy for the preposterous Mr. Kane survives. All three of these writers share a similar opinion about Citizen Kane. Individually they each appreciate different aspects of the film. John O’Hara is intoxicated with the performance of Orson Welles, both in front and behind the camera. Bosely Crowther discusses the reality of the film itself. John Marsh believes that it’s unconventional approach is what will set Citizen Kane apart from other movies in the future. Although each writer praises different aspects of the movie they all agree that Citizen Kane is a film that will drastically alter the film making processfrom now on.
